Galangal

Galangal is closely related to ginger, and is native to Asia (more specifically, China and the Himalaya region). The plant is a perennial with long, ribbon leaves and white flowers. It's similarity to ginger has led to galangal being used as a spice, particularly in some of the Eastern European countries. The root or rhyzome is used much in the same way as ginger, and is brewed as a tea to help relieve stomach ailments.

Latin: Alpinia galanga or Alpinia officinalis
Common names: Chewing John, China root, colic root, garguat

Using in rituals
In magick, the galangal root is the part used of the plant. If galangal is unavailable, fresh ginger root may be substituted.

The element of fire is strong in galangal root, and can be seen in it's properties. Galangal can be used to add sexual passion to a relationship. Pieces of the root can also help to strengthen your psychic abilities.

Galangal root is also used for protection (usually carried) and can also help break curses or hexes against you. It can give you courage in times of stress as well.
