The star-shaped seed pods have a strong licorice smell and taste. As such, anise has been used for hundreds of years as a spice, or flavouring in cooking. The pods are even chewed whole, as a breath freshener. These stars usually have 8 points, but you do sometimes find pieces with 10 or even 12 points. Star anise is similar in smell/taste to anise, but they are different plants. Star anise plants are native to China.
Latin: Illicum verum
Common names: Chinese anise, Aniseed stars
Using in rituals
It's typical to use the whole seed pods of star anise for magickal uses. The more intact the 'star' is, the more powerful the herb.
Because of the large size and shape of star anise, it is well-suited for charm bags or other similar uses. The pods can be strung on a thread or string to create home or altar decorations.
Rituals for protection are the most common use for star anise, but it can also add a powerful influence to any work with psychic ability, dreams or divination. Star anise is an excellent addition to dream pillows to ward off nightmares, but you should use crushed pieces or you might poke yourself in the head with a sharp star.
