His branches cover the worlds, with the roots growing down into three - grows through the 9 worlds
The roots are based in the underworld, the trunk grows through Midgard (the world of Earth) and the branches hold the realm of the Gods, Asgard.
No two sources seem to agree which three worlds they are. The most often belief is Niflheim, Muspelheim and Jotunheim.
